Our Programs

We believe in providing resources, education, and nurturing the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community in West Africa. Our mission is to reduce the barriers to education for deaf rural children in Benin so that they may be able to grow into healthy, faith-minded adults with great economic prospects.

Education

Live Ear Ministries (LEM) exists to educate, reach, and nurture the Deaf in West Africa. One of the ways we accomplished this was by establishing the Ephphatha Center for the Education and Training of the Deaf, also known as CEEFS. It is our residential school located in Hainde, Benin that provides shelter and education to over 50 students per year. Without our school, these children from rural areas would have no other access to deaf education.

Evangelism

Giving the Deaf access to the Gospel is at the heart of LEM’s mission. We have an Annual Summer Mission Trip where we travel to several West African countries and provide Deaf camps and trainings for pastors, teachers and parents. We also outreach to the local villages, both hearing and deaf children and adults, through our VBS and Women’s ministries.

Economy

There is a scarcity of jobs for the Deaf in Benin due to inaccessibility and high unemployment rates. Our goal is to equip our students with a viable economic future. After completion of their basic education at our school, some of our students will leave to pursue higher education. For our other students, we provide training in hair dressing, tailoring, carpentry, upholstering, farming, and raising animals.

Our Impact

  • 321 students total enrolled since 2008

  • 51 currently enrolled students

  • 32 students from our program passed the government exam to qualify for secondary education

  • 15 students are currently in vocational training

  • 419 participated in Summer Deaf Camps in Benin, Togo, and Niger

  • 113 deaf youth and adults accepted Christ in 2023

  • 229 hearing children participated in the 2023 Vacation Bible School

  • 47 gather weekly for studying the Bible, praying, and ministering to each others needs through our Women’s Ministry

  • 72 hearing children attend weekly Saturday morning Bible Club
